Spanish 1 for Middle Schoolers

Taking a Spanish 1 course in middle school offers numerous benefits that extend far beyond just acquiring a new language. It lays a solid foundation for language learning at an age when students are particularly adept at absorbing new sounds and structures, making it easier to achieve fluency. This early start not only enhances cognitive skills, such as memory and problem-solving, but also fosters cultural awareness and appreciation, promoting a more inclusive worldview.

My kids, like many children in the US, were introduced to Spanish at an early age through TV and movies. My daughter (10 yo, 5th grade) has even shown an interest in languages and tried a few of the free apps out there. However, knowing the importance of learning a foreign language, I wanted to offer her a more structured Spanish 1 program. Something engaging that would take her from knowing a few phrases to having a solid foundation for fluency.

Let’s take a closer look at Mas Spanish, a Spanish 1 course created for students just starting out on their foreign language journey.

Mas Spanish: Spanish 1 Overview

Mas Spanish offers thorough and complete instruction for Spanish 1. This course was developed to take your student from learning the ABCs through counting, conjugating verbs, and conversational Spanish. Throughout this course, your student will be learning to read, write, and speak Spanish with instructor, Katie Beville.

First Impressions of Mas Spanish

There are a few things I look for when choosing an online program for my kids. First and foremost it has to be engaging. Katie, or “Maestra” as she teaches in an early lesson, is an engaging and approachable teacher. She injects a lot of personality into the lessons and is easy to understand in both English and Spanish. Most importantly, the lessons are the perfect pace. Easy to follow and moves through the material quickly enough to keep my daughter’s interest.

Secondly, and especially when it comes to teaching a foreign language, I am looking for a program that my daughter can do independently. Mas Spanish fits the bill. This program offers complete, independent instruction from start to finish with a series of video lessons divided into twelve units. It requires very little parental involvement, which is great for parents who do not know Spanish (like me). Your child can move through the videos in order and at their own pace and even go back and review videos if they need a refresher.

Structured Spanish 1 Instruction with Mas Spanish

Finally, and maybe most importantly, for middle school I want a course with solid structure. This is where a Spanish 1 program has a distinct advantage over free apps. I can see that my daughter is progressing through the lesson and mastering the material.

I really enjoyed the structure of this class. The lessons follow a similar pattern of instruction, independent practice, and review. Video lessons guide your student through new instruction, followed by a worksheet. Then, they can make their practice perfect by watching the review video and correcting their answers. This review component is essential and will give your student the feedback and practice they need to build confidence in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish.

Additionally, Maestra provides extension activities in the form of online games and exercises. So if your kids are into online games (mine still is) they can use those activities as a more structured extended practice.
